ROTARY :  BRIEF HISTORY 

The world’s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinosis, USA, was formed on 23^rd February, 1905 by Paul P Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a professional club, the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth.  The name “Rotary” was derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices.

Rotarians are involved in promoting international understanding.  Their service to the community is world wide appreciated.  In the year 1985, Rotary made landmark historic commitment to immunize all of the world’s children against polio.  Working with government organizations and national governments through its polio plus programs.  The rotary is the largest private sector contributor to the global polio eradication campaign.  Rotarians have mobilized hundreds of thousands of Polio Plus volunteers and have immunized more than one billion children worldwide.

In the year 1927, Rotary club of LAHORE  was formed and it was recognized as first club in India.  In the year 1929, Rotary club of Bombay and Madras were formed.  Now several hundreds of clubs are existing  and several hundreds of thousands Rotarians are committed to community service.
